January and February are Dental Months, and We Have a Contest to Celebrate!

Posted: 2014-01-15

Westbridge Veterinary Hospital, an animal clinic in Mississauga. We are thrilled to announce that one again, January and February represent our Dental Months where we are offering free dental examinations for your dogs and cats. In addition, we are offering a 10% discount off of all dental services. Finally, see below for our Dental Month Contest!

Dental health is extremely important to the overall health of your pet. We are reminded regularly of the importance of our own dental hygiene, including preventing cavities, controlling plaque and the stigma of halitosis – more simply put, bad breath. In Canada, most of us are visiting our dentist at minimum once yearly, despite daily prophylaxis such as brushing, flossing and mouth wash. For the same reasons we place such emphasis on our own dental health, we should have a similar concern for our pets’ mouths. Believe it or not, the most common disease in our small animal companions (dogs and cats) is periodontal disease.

Further, we all know how painful and irritating dental ‘issues’ can be, whether it is sensitivity, having that annoying popcorn kernel stuck in your teeth, causing inflammation of your gums, or periodontal disease and gingivitis in general. Studies have shown that dogs and cats have pain thresholds that are almost identical to humans. The problem lies in the fact that our pets rarely show outward signs of pain or discomfort, as a result of the genetic adaptation as wild animals to not show signs of weakness, which would make them prey for predators. As a result, they continue to eat and behave normally.

We understand through years of research and experience that one of the reasons that modern society has a longer lifespan is the significant improvements that we’ve made with our dental care. Disease in the mouth is not localized; oral bacteria, left untreated, will enter the blood stream and can have very negative effects on the heart, liver and kidneys. The same inevitably holds true for our beloved pets.

We encourage you to visit our dental health page for more information, as well as to see the detail that is involved in a dental cleaning for your pet. Our weekly blogs will focus on various dental health topics throughout these two months.

In conclusion, you might ask yourself: What can I do to improve my pets oral health? The answer is simple. Regular examination of your pets’ mouth can help to detect dental disease early, when there are more options for treatment rather than extractions. If the gums appear red and inflamed, if you see broken teeth, or if you notice a foul odor in your pet’s mouth, let our veterinary team know right away, and come in for a free dental examination.

Dental Months Contest – We Want to See Your Pets Smile!

Westbridge Veterianry Hospital, an animal clinic in Mississauga. In celebration of dental months, we are hosting a fun contest! The rules are easy – simply post a picture of your pet ‘smiling’, such as the image to the right, to our Facebook Page by February 28th, 2014. We will have a vote for the best smile, and the winner will receive a large gift basket filled with all sorts of dental goodies – chews, bones, toys, toothbrush and toothpaste, and much more. If that wasn’t enough, we are also including a $20 Tim Hortons Gift Card for the winner, and a $20 Tim Hortons gift card for the runner up!

You can be creative, and really any pose where we can see some teeth (or where teeth would be if they hadn’t otherwise fallen out or been extracted ;) ) will be eligible!
