Bug bites and stings can happen during any season. Most often they will just cause some discomfort, redness, itching and swelling. In some cases, an anti-histamine (like diphenhydramine) may be recommended. However, just like humans, our pets can have severe allergic reactions to bee stings or insect bites.
For your pet’s mild bites or stings here are some basic first-aid practices you can try:
- You can try removing the stinger by sliding a credit card across it. This avoids pushing the stinger and/or venom sacs further into your pets’ skin. However, please do not hurt your pet! If he or she resents this, seems painful, or you are not successful, just stop and seek veterinary attention.
- A cool compress or ice pack wrapped in a towel can be applied to reduce swelling. Place and remove several times so the area doesn’t get too cold.
- A small paste of baking soda and water can be applied over the area of the bite wound. This will help to soothe the irritation.
If you see hives, a lot of swelling or discomfort at the site of the bite, facial swelling or your pet experiences vomiting, weakness, or trembling, please contact your veterinarian immediately for advice. These can be serious signs.
