September is Cancer Awareness Month

Posted: 2015-09-14

In remembrance of the trouble-making cancer-survivor, Keetah, at Smiling Blue Skies in 2014

September is Cancer Awareness Month at Westbridge. We would like to take this month to raise attention to the importance of cancer research, as developments in companion animal oncology not only help to save the lives of our beloved pets, but of us humans, too! While great strides have been made, with effective treatments available for many cancers, there are still far too many for which we have no good answers for. The importance of cancer research can and will touch each of our lives at some point or another, be it a beloved pet or family member.

The Smiling Blue Skies is a great example of an organization intent on fighting the battle against cancers in our companion animals. They host fund-raising events Canada-wide, with all proceeds going to the OVC Pet Trust Fund . OVC Pet Trust is Canada`s first charitable fund entirely dedicated to advancing the health and well-being of companion animals. The organization was founded out of necessity in 1986, when funding support was virtually non-existent for applied health investigation that benefited companion animals. Since then, OVC Pet Trust has raised millions of dollars through the generosity of friends and supporters like you. A large part of this fund is geared towards cancer research, and the new OVC Animal Cancer Centre.

Westbridge will be taking part in the 4th Annual Smiling Blue Skies Walk to End Cancer on Saturday September 26th, 2015. You can sponsor our Westbridge Team by pledging an amount of your choosing at: Support Westbridge

All donations are appreciated and 100% of the funds donated go directly to the Smiling Blue Skies cancer fund to assist OVC Animal Cancer Centre’s research to find alternative treatments and supportive care for canine cancer.

Interesting in walking as well? Join us Saturday September 26th, 2015. Registration is at 10:30am and the walk begins at 12:00pm at Kew Beach off Leash Dog Park in Toronto, ON

Also, over the next few weeks, we will be posting stories of our personal furry friends that have had to fight the hard battle against cancer, bringing to light the importance of such research. We welcome you to share your stories, too!
