Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM)

Westbridge is now offering Herbal Medicine as a treatment option!

Dr Rosamund has been studying with the Chi Institute of Chinese Medicine, and is offering appointments for Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM).

What is TCVM?

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) is an extension of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a holistic medical system that has been used in China for over 2000 years.

  • In TCVM, disease is understood as an imbalance in the body.
  • Diagnosis is based on identifying the underlying pattern of imbalance. Treatment focuses on restoring the body to balance/ harmony within itself.
  • TCVM practitioners feel that any imbalance must be examined with respect to the individual patient as a whole.
  • Treatment is always tailored to the individual – this will include herbal formulas, and may also include diet recommendations, as well as possibly therapeutic laser treatments.

Where does it fit in?

Our goal at Westbridge has always been to help each and every pet thrive.

  • For some patients, herbal therapies can be used alongside other treatments. For example, herbal therapies can be used to help support a patient undergoing chemotherapy.
  • For others, TCVM may be used as a stand-alone treatment, such as when current therapies are not effective.
  • The goal of any TCVM treatment is to determine the underlying cause of disease, and to treat both the current symptoms as well as the root cause.

We strongly believe that the best medicine is integrative medicine, where we use all tools available to us, and find the best combination of treatments tailored to each individual patient.

Q: What Can I Expect at my Visit?
A: All TCVM consultations are booked with Dr Rosamund. The visit will include a detailed review of your pet’s history and a thorough physical examination, aimed at determining your pet’s unique pattern. We will then discuss treatment options, including herbal formulas specifically chosen for your pet, as well as other recommendations such as diet and lifestyle modification.

Q: If my pet has already been seen by a veterinarian at our hospital, why does he/she need another examination before starting on herbal treatment?
A: It is important to find your pet’s individual pattern (TCVM diagnosis) in order to select the correct herbal formula. As a result of the individualized diagnosis, the herbal treatment for one pet may be quite different from another pet with the same western diagnosis (ie arthritis).

Q: Can TCVM be used along with other treatments?
A: Yes, absolutely!
If your pet is already undergoing other treatments, either at Westbridge Veterinary Hospital or at another hospital, TCVM herbs can be used at the same time.
Dr Rosamund will always consult with your primary veterinarian to ensure your pet receives the best care possible. For this reason, if your pet is being seen by a veterinarian outside of Westbridge, we ask that you have all records sent to us a few days prior to your initial visit, and keep us up to date on any ongoing treatment.

Q: What About Side Effects?
A: Side effects are very rare with herbal medicine. The treatments are non-invasive and generally are very safe and well accepted by patients.
